Covering an area of 1,645 hectares, the Pointe-Noire autonomous port has just gained new land of 60 hectares on the sea thanks to the backfilling work currently being carried out there, through deepening and dredging of the port basin around Ilogs, a subsidiary of the national oil company of Congo (SNPC).

Completed at almost 50%, on State funds, despite the difficult economic context, the embankment is part of the sanitation of the port basin, the modernization, extension and development of this structure and will enable the construction of an additional 120-meter quay, with a view to increasing its reception capacity, in terms of median and quays.

During the site visit, on April 1, 2017, by the Minister of Transport, Civil Aviation and the Merchant Marine, Mr. Gilbert Mokoki, the Director General of the Pointe-Noire Autonomous Port, Mr. Séraphin Balhat, did not fail to thank the President of the Republic, Denis Sassou N'guesso, for his personal involvement in the project.

“The autonomous port made the loving choice, under the impetus of the government, to mark the march towards the development of achievements and modernization of the relevant infrastructure, in order to boost, for the benefit of the transport sector, one of the driving forces of national economy, the fullness of the meaning and structuring effects of the social program of the President of the Republic”, he said.

Minister Gilbert Mokoki came out satisfied and believes that the work will be completed.

"We are here on a plot of 800 meters by 400 meters on which an environmental dam has been built for the metering basin, in order to stem a phenomenon that had appeared here, during the deepening and dredging of the port. We saw the arrival of oil patties. It caught people's attention. On this site, a quay is being built and all measures are taken to clean up the environment. The operations carried out there consist of reducing risks and the quay will be built to standard”. Concluded the Minister of Transport, Civil Aviation and the Merchant Marine.

The Pointe-Noire autonomous port is a deep-water port in the Gulf of Guinea which handles the traffic of boats and goods from and to Congo and the sub-region. This makes it a driving force and a major asset for the development and the economic influence of the country.

Faced with strong growth in maritime traffic, for nearly a decade, significant investments have been made to increase the reception capacities of fifth-generation container ships, to process goods and to improve the services offered in the port, through a priority investment program (PIP).

The project to extend the Pointe-Noire autonomous port is a major priority and strategic project for the government in order to make this port more competitive both regionally and internationally.
